Gaetz's defense of Katie Hill was something I never quite understood, but suddenly it makes a lot more sense.

When he was in the Florida state legislature, it was rumored that he played a game with other legislators where they scored various numbers of points for sleeping with aides, interns, legislators, married legislators etc.

This is completely normal behavior among men, lol.

No it isn't? What kind of men are you hanging out with?

Florida legislators, obviously.

Psst: he's trolling.

I don’t like Matt Gaetz but:

>NYT
>Feds

Find me two less trustworthy groups.

Republican Congressmen & right-wing media.

Knee-jerk defense of Gaetz should be a red-flag. Wouldn't be surprised if we find out she diddled some teenage boys in her district.

Didn't her husband get busted for something similar?
If she had half-a-brain (which she does not), she would have completely kept out of this.

Well, since she's stripped from all committee assignments, there is not much else to do other than saying stupid things to remain kinda relevant.

Saying stupid things is one of her core competencies.

I think you’re getting her confused with Lauren Boebert

There have been tabloid rumors that MTG has had multiple affairs outside her marriage, but I'm not aware of anything being verified by a reputable source.

Gaetz showed nude photos of women he said he'd slept with to lawmakers

To everyone’s great surprise, it turns out that Matt Gaetz does indeed have a pattern of pervy behaviour.

CNN says ...
Gaetz allegedly showed off to other lawmakers photos and videos of nude women he said he had slept with, the sources told CNN, including while on the House floor. The sources, including two people directly shown the material, said Gaetz displayed the images of women on his phone and talked about having sex with them. One of the videos showed a naked woman with a hula hoop, according to one source.

Bizarre and kinky.
What a dope. Why would you do that while on the House floor? That's like very immature (and stupid).

Are we certain that "while on the House floor" is modifying "showed off" and not "slept with"? Wink

Gaetz is toast politically, of course, but I think there's a very real possibility he ends up behind bars.

It says the tweet is unavailable.

That's odd.  The CBS story is still up: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/matt-gaetz-trip-to-bahamas-is-part-of-federal-probe-into-sex-trafficking-sources-say/

A House Republican has called on Gaetz to resign. No points for guessing who:

I figured Kinzinger would be the first. Whether or not you like his politics, there's no denying that he has integrity.

The House Ethics Committee has opened an investigation into Gaetz.

Does anyone have a clear sense for what crimes Gaetz could realistically be charged with in this case?

There are now a lot of pretty credible allegations that he has done a whole bunch of disgusting stuff.

But it is unclear to me how any of this is obviously a crime, especially a federal crime.

I mean, you could make a theoretical argument that it violates multiple prostitution-adjacent federal laws, but only in such a tenuous way that I doubt anyone would reasonably expect a conviction on any of it.

If he brought underage girls across state lines (or international borders, since a Bahamas trip has now been mentioned) for sex, that's the very definition of sex trafficking, a Federal crime.

My first reaction was "oh this might be something to get the Trump loyalists and QAnoners to turn on Gaetz." Alas, I just checked on Free Republic, and the main response is just "CNN is fake news."

At this point, it looks like he will be a congressman behind bars until and unless he becomes ineligible to hold public office due to the part of Florida's Civil Death Penalty (you are rendered a partial non-adult citizen upon conviction of a felony) law that wasn't repealed. I forget if it would even apply to him as a Federal office holder.

The House can expel him for a felony conviction that precludes him from being an active Member of Congress.

Would they?

Yes, I think enough Republican members would support it to join with the Democrats for the necessary 2/3 majority.
