I thought he meant record deepness as in deeper than other lakes. Not deeper than in the past.

If so, he's wrong.  Maximum depth of Great Lakes:

Superior: 1333 feet
Michigan: 923 feet
Ontario: 802 feet
Huron: 750 feet
Erie: 210 feet

Deepest lake in the U.S.: Crater Lake, 1949 feet

Deepest lake in North America: Great Slave Lake, 2015 feet

Deepest lake in the world: Lake Baikal, 3893 feet
