Here we go: According to Bild live, Laschet backs down and accepts that Kreisvorsitzendenkonferenz (district chairperson conference) is necessary (but still wants a decision in the Vorstand first).

People (including myself) have consistently underestimated Söder. Devious, evil guy, but he has been one step ahead of his opponents at every turn. Anyone thinking he just accepts the Bundesvorstand as the arbiter of his fate without engineering it to break Laschet has, I am afraid, perhaps yet again underestimated him.

If I’m understanding this correctly, Laschet’s last gambit is to have the leadership make the decision today and then let the district conference express its preferences in a non-binding vote?

Laschet gets his wish - Vorstand will make a decision now, instead of waiting for Kreisvorsitzendenkonferenz first. Voting taking place now where there will almost certainly be a majority for Laschet - but what margin?

Result: 31 Laschet, 9 Söder, 6 abstention

But I do understand it correctly that both the Bundestag faction and the county chair convention will be casting a ballot for endorsement tomorrow?

The convention has been called off according to Bild. It seems like Laschet has succeded in ramming through his candidacy after six and a half hours of dithering. It will be interesting to see how Söder reacts.

Maybe history repeats itself: after 16 years in government, the CDU runs a candidate that is considered part of the status quo and not the optimal choice for winning the election. He fails and is beaten by someone belonging the pragmatic wing of the main center-left party. Perhaps, a Bavarian is chosen 4 years later to challenge the new ruling coalition.
