Yeah, definitely Essex, as East Anglian Lefty said, if you’re going by similarly mocked and stereotyped places, as a trashy coastal cultural desert. It is more right-wing than Florida, relative to the rest of country.

I don't disagree, though I've heard Essex described as England's New Jersey, which also fits pretty well: mix of urban sprawl, surprisingly pretty countryside, kinda crummy beaches, and working class people sneered at by the megalopolis next door and the rest of the country generally.

Yep, New Jersey, especially the more working class coastal areas of the state, is also a good comparison to Essex (up to both having infamous ‘reality’ shows set there), although you don’t find the elite suburbs and racially diverse cities of NJ in Essex.

If we’re talking of a place where... unusual... things occur, I think the West Country is a much better British fit for that type of thing than Essex.

The West Country's a bit too rural dominated to be a Florida, but you're right about its reputation for being full of disreputable oddballs. Maybe it's England's Arkansas?

I once heard someone say that the Forest of Dean was England’s Appalachia; wooded, history of mining (albeit not on as large a scale), and quite insular and culturally unique.

Lol what is "Florida" other than a microcosm of the entire country?  Its a state of +22M that is driving American economic/population growth on a national scale, is dinky Essex similarly dynamic?  lol

Y'all stop giving Florida a bad wrap, it probably beats the s[inks]t out of wherever y'all live anyway

If you read the original premise of the thread, it was not to compare the socioeconomic and geographic similarity of other regions to Florida, it was, “What is the area of your country which is the butt of their compatriots’ jokes?”.

And I’ll take London over Florida any day of the week.
