Three days ago a friend of mine lost one of his parents to cancer. It's the third time in the last few years that a friend of mine who's around my age loses a parent to cancer. In addition to a colleague of my mother who died in the same way a couple years ago.

I cannot imagine going through this big of an ideological shift in six months. What the heck happened?

It actually happened pretty much all between August and September. Long story short I just started feeling a stronger need for (socialized? formalized?) spirituality, and then I got tripped with Catholicism, I guess. I would not have imagined that to befall me either, but what can I say, God works in mysterious ways (or, for atheists, Atlas melted my brain).
I wouldn't call that a big ideological shift actually, especially in so much as politics is concerned.

By the way, as you can see from our interactions the non-bolded sentence is as strong as ever

Today I visited my maternal grandparents. I talked to my grandfather about all the places he's been to when he worked on cruise ships, which always fascinates me. Some examples being Ushuaia, Yalta, Nagasaki, Nuku'alofa, Safaga, Reykjavik... And about the origin of the many objects from around the world he now owns. I think my favourite is a wood sculpture of a sailboat from Tonga.

And as I started typing this I began having meandering thoughts about his life, and my family in general, and now I'm gloomy and I don't know why. Maybe I'm just tired.

This is some projection on my part, but it may be because our generation seems to be living in the shadows of far more adventurous and interesting people. The past year in particular may encourage this attitude as we are restrained from travel and socializing, and as such some of our personal development is being halted or slowed.

I don't think it's projection at all, I think it's a very good argument. There is also the fact that my grandfather clearly made a socioeconomic advancement to his family, and I'm living in the shadow of that too, and he is 83 years old, and people don't live forever.

Dissertation writing, yeah. All-nighters are when I get most of my work done, because my brain is broken. Sigh...

Oh well. I've been on a 'nocturnal schedule' too, except that it is not on purpose and I'm not doing any work at all. I need a damn break as soon as possible because I'm going to bed at unhealthy hours. At least you are doing something useful. I haven't studied since... I don't even try to recall. Double sigh...

I'm of half a mind to suggest you adjusted your (non-)sleep schedule to better mirror the average time most Atlas posters are up and about.
