Generic R. The democrats seems to need really stong candidates to win presidential elections, like Bill Clinton or Barack Obama (or Hillary Clinton, hopefully). A "generic D" would look more like a John Kerry or an Al Gore and neither of those could even beat George W. Bush, who really couldn't be considered a "strong" candidate - certainly a weaker candidate than Mitt Romney or John McCain who both lost to Obama.

Someone bland like Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Jeb Bush, etc. THAT type of "generic R", would probably beat a "generic D" candidate.
