I actually didn't get that either, but I assumed it was some inside joke that everybody who's into politics would understand, except for me. So I didn't want to say anything lest people point and laugh at me.

Well, don't worry about that, man.

The fact is, of course, that we attended the funeral of Khrushchev's ghastly regime, so I'm not sure what the funeral reference is really about.  And of Khrushchev did actually say "we will bury you," so there's no disputing that.

Anybody who would seriously prefer him over the current president has the maturity and intelligence of a lampshade.

The funeral reference is to what most now believe Khrushchev really meant by that comment, it was basically saying something like "We will outlast you"

He was wrong, wasn't he?  What a shame.

And he really meant, "We will bury you."

Yeah, he was wrong. But still, the comment is usually misunderstood.

Unless you're an expert in Russian translation, you're not really in the position to definitively say what he really meant.

If you're not an expert in Russian translation, how do you know the comment was misunderstood?  If I'm not in position to definitively say what he really meant, then neither are you.

VP Nixon addressed Khrushchev's statement in their 1959 "Kitchen Debate," and he didn't deny the meaning then.
