Q: How long did it take the Western Roman Empire to recover after Romulus was overthrown by Odoacer?
A: Never.  It ceased to exist.

Q: How long did the the Eastern Roman Empire take to recover after the Moslems conquered Constantinople?
A: Never.

Powerful nations do not last forever.  Yes, the above examples were forces from without.  But they were forces that desired the end to the old order, wherever they were from.  (And yes, you can bring up Russia in this instance.)  The Koch brothers, the oil companies, Roger Stone, the Mercers, the alt-right, rural white America, etc. - they, together, are surely forces "without" relative to what the USA was under the Obama Administration, just as much as Odoacer - and his literal army of supporters, both German and Roman - and the Moslems were to the Roman empires.

<snip>

No -- America will survive Trump; the Roman Empire, a decrepit entity from its inception, survived Nero, Caligula, and Commodus. After this nightmare we will want to change things so that we never get a leader like him again. Imperial Rome lasted until it ran out of resources.

<snip

Historians hundreds of years from now will consider the USA a "decrepit entity from its inception" because of slavery.  They will consider its demise to have been inevitable.
