I'm not surprised about Portland.  Phoenix is a bit surprising, as is the fact that the New York City metro area is more religious than the national average, and almost on par with Houston, Dallas and Atlanta.  It's probably due in part to cultural Catholics who don't regularly attend church but say they are Catholic.
