     This is called the "rally around the flag" effect. People who are in a state of war will close ranks behind their own nation, even if it requires them to agree to morally reprehensible propositions. It strikes me that we are too comfortable in the West to properly comprehend this kind of phenomenon, even though the same thing happened here in the wake of 9/11.
