I was a left leaning European at the time, didn't like Mrs Thatcher at all. However I was certain that I wanted Reagan to win: why?

well as an overseas observer I was primarly interested in US Foreign rather than domestic policy and as such Carter came across as niave and weak when dealing with the Soviets, whereas Reagan was offering a more muscular approach.

I felt Reagan was always an odds-on cert to win the election and despite the odd hick-up proved an excellent President. He had the one qaulity all politicians need.. luck!!

ps one interesting point. Reagan was always regarded in europe as something of a joke, which of course was manifestly unfair. However this is nothing to the hatred that Bush seems to inspire in what would otherwise be regarded as rational people.....
