So basically 3 years after it became national news and everyone agreed it was a problem, a small part of it finally gets fixed... by the private sector. Great argument against government power, that conservatives could capitalize on if they still cared about that sort of thing.

And that's why I'm still mostly libertarian.  Relying on government to get things done just isn't efficient.

All libertarians should be airdropped on a remote island. Those who survive the impact will fight, and the sole survivor of this ordeal (the Ur-Libertarian) will be given a fifth of a bitcoin

Mmmk. I'm fine with just throwing commies from helicopters.

't

This is obviously a comment made only in reply to a consciously absurd post and not a sincere expression of belief or desire to kill.
I'd be more willing to believe that if the alternative(that he's not at all uncomfortable with mass murdering communists and lowkey is cool with people like pinochet) weren't completely consistent with his character(and also deliberately echoing a specific dictators atrocities in response to a facetious and absurd post is kind of unpleasant).

What about his character is "completely consistent" with throwing people out of helicopters?!

Yeah Lol Im not shocked the maroons are against gun control. Its quite normal

In fairness, Debs was a brilliant man ahead of his time.

>

> Eugene Debs was a brilliant man ahead of his time

Something doesn't add up here 🤔

Well, look at Eugene Debs platform when he ran for president. It called for unemployment Insurance, workers compensation for Injured Workers, the right to unionize, a 40 Hour Work Week, desegregation and civil rights, and government investment in infrastructure. When you get down to it, a moderate Republican in the 1970s would have supported Eugene Debs has platform from 1932. In fact, any Republican who doesn't in 2019 is frankly pretty damned unreasonable.

Debs wasn't alive in 1932.

From a strict constitutionalist standpoint, a fetus has by definition not been "born in the United States," and therefore isn't entitled to the rights of an American citizen.

They are persons under U.S. jurisdiction.   Most of the rights mentioned in the Constitution are not limited to citizens.

Right, but if it comes to the point of saving the life of a US citizen or a non-citizen, the former should be given priority, no?

I don't think that's how it works.

The mainstream view among psychologists who work in the area of intelligence is to consider IQ a useful measure of at least some aspects of intelligence, but having limitations and flaws as measures tend to do.

^ People aren’t simply parts of a math equation, dude.  Politician willingly ignores trends he doesn’t like (which is different from predicting them inaccurately, as I certainly did), but that doesn’t make trends worshipers right, either.  We aren’t going to have a map in 2044 that is 2016 trends drawn out another 25 years from right now.  That’s absurd.

How is it worshipping trends to use them to make a guess about how a county will vote?

The number of available slots for a starring role in reality tv is pretty limited, especially as the heyday for that is over.   However I expect our country to be inundated with random people flipping the bird at politicians in hopes of riding it to political stardom.  Is this what you people want?

You haven't explained how having a reality TV show would qualify someone to be the most powerful person in the world.

"Doctor, you didn't graduate from med school, you just printed out a diploma you found online?"

"Yes, but Trump is president, so it's fine."

You hate it because it's true.

I am considering voting for Bloomberg but haven't decided yet, Buttigieg only gets 10% and Biden is corrupted,  and Warren and Sanders are socialists

What....what exactly was wrong with that post?

He's now made about half a dozen posts to the effect that all discussion comparing Bloomberg to Trump must cease, none of which contributed anything resembling a thought to the conversation.

It all has the air of a preening small-town official holding court at the local watering hole and getting flustered when his fellow patrons have the temerity to ignore him.

As usual, a rude and exceptionally trashy choice to post in this thread out of a discussion in which you are participating. You have a way of making people feel sorry for making the mistake of engaging with you in the first place.

Dude, you've been on Atlas too long to be this thin-skinned.  In any case, I can't stand Bloomberg either and hate what him being nominated would represent, but the idea that he'd be worse for the country than four more years of Trump is absurd at best.

This might not be the proper thread to discuss this, but to those of us who view Trump as not the cause of our problems but a symptom of those problems that have existed long before his presidency, four or eight years of Bloomberg would not be much better than four more years of Trump because we see no evidence that he would do what is necessary to change those things which led to the election of Trump in the first place.

If it's four more years of Trump as opposed to four or eight years of Bloomberg followed by four or eight years of Cotton or Hawley, I would be hard pressed not to pick the former because if you think Trumpism is bad, imagine Trumpism but with a president who's not constantly undermined by scandal and personality and overall ineptitude.

I would think progressives would prefer a Hawley Presidency to a Trump one when it comes to economic policy. Hawley seems to actually want to take on monopolies and build an industrial policy to implement the sort of economic populist agenda that Trump got elected on. I wouldn't expect Hawley to delegate so much policymaking to people with a more generic Republican tax/spending-cut agenda the way Trump has.
