Stalin eliminated political opponents, this is very bad. Hitler eliminated races, this is worse. You can choose your political views, but you can not choose your race.
The Gulag camps were prisons, they were not killing factories like the nazi camps.

being a "political opponent" of the regime under Stalin was at least as correlated to one's ethnicity as it was to one's actual views.

I mean, I think WWII showed us which one was, quite literally, the lesser of two evils...

Stalin was certainly less of a threat to the West.
