I can only hope that those of you who are so adamant that Germany/South Korea are worthy of help remain so convicted when/if the President withdraws.

No President would be stupid enough to withdraw from South Korea, that would be a gift to China. Not even Trump would be moronic enough to do something like that. Come on. Make a realistic argument.

I’m not making an argument. I hope it never happens, and I hope you can smugly remember this as me being alarmist and you being sober and correct. But I don’t believe you, I think it’s perfectly feasible an American President would be exactly that moronic.

No Republican would ever dare be seen as "weak on China" and a truly isolationist Democrat would never win the primary, so no I don't think we'd ever reach a circumstance where an American president would do that.

All I can say is I hope you’re right, and odds are you will be - but the view from the outside that America is sliding irrevocably towards isolationism. And I hope that if it happens you and others in this thread will maintain your conviction that keeping troops in South Korea is the right decision.

If the US ever gives up on South Korea, it won’t even matter anymore because China will already have overtaken us as global hegemon.

It's refreshing to see left-wingers/liberals/Democrats disagreeing with each other over actually salient issues again rather than everybody taking the same line because the matter of "is having a sociopathic narcissist with authoritarian impulses leading the country a bad thing" somehow became a partisan issue.

I actually kinda miss the unity myself.

It makes for more interesting conversation fodder on the forum.

In terms of policy debates, sure I guess. But I kinda miss when nobody really talked or cared too much about specific ideological disagreements because we were all focused on the campaign.

But then again I’ve always found the campaigning/elections side of politics to be more interesting than the policy itself, to tell the truth.
