Calvin's wager?
Anyways, his profit/loss margins are ridiculous. He employs slave labor to build a ridiculous amount of manufactured highly technical goods, then
gives them away. Where's the profit? Where's the imports to support his enslaved elves? Does he also have plantation elves growing whatever meager food he can get out of the inhospitable soil of the North Pole? He needs to go to a wage labor model for his elves, ending his commitment to supply them with food and shelter. Then, he needs to open up free trade with the nations of the Earth, supplying them with these goods in exchange for the handy agricultural surplus the fertile soils of the world produce. The price of the Christmas gifts goes up slightly, but not unreasonably so, and the North Pole becomes a far more prosperous locale, maybe even further industrializing and joining the WTO and other organizations and becoming the new China.
