Julian Assange arrested by British police at Ecuadorean embassy
Quote
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested by British police on Thursday after they were invited into the Ecuadorean embassy where he has been holed up since 2012.

“Julian Assange, 47, has today, Thursday 11 April, been arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) at the Embassy of Ecuador,” police said.

Police said they arrested Assange after being “invited into the embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorean government’s withdrawal of asylum.”

The Latest: Snowden: Assange arrest a blow to press freedom
Quote
1:10 p.m.

Edward Snowden, the former security contractor who leaked classified information about U.S. surveillance programs, says the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is a blow to media freedom.

“Images of Ecuador’s ambassador inviting the UK’s secret police into the embassy to drag a publisher of--like it or not--award-winning journalism out of the building are going to end up in the history books,” Snowden said in a tweet.

“Assange’s critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.”

Snowden was charged by the United States in 2013 of violating the country’s espionage act. He was granted asylum by Russia that year and the asylum has been extended until at least 2020.

He's pure ego. It was always about him. Once he took a side he lost any credibility as an honest actor.

Yeah! All the disclosures we got thanks to him (among others) into a pumpkins at midnight he revealed that DNC was corrupt!

The U.S. Justice Department has charged WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange with conspiring with Chelsea Manning to break into a classified government computer.

The charge was announced Thursday after Assange was taken into custody in London in connection with a U.S. extradition request, as well as for breaching U.K. bail conditions in 2012.

His lawyer has previously said that Assange planned to fight any U.S. charges against him.

The indictment accuses Assange of assisting Manning, a former U.S. intelligence analyst, in cracking a password that helped Manning infiltrate Pentagon computers.

Also, I have learned today that the name of the president of Ecuador is Lenin. There are a lot of jokes in Russian twitter about Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich) screwing with Assange, ahaha.

This arrest is good, but it's nowhere near as cinematic as it should be. Real justice would have been him being shoved into the back of a black car, seeing Hillary Clinton in the passenger seat glaring at him and then it driving away with him screaming at the top of his lungs. LOL.

Are you implying that Hillary is a "sadistic sociopath" WikiLeaks claimed she was? I think she dreamed of that you described, too!

More obviously, the messages show a strong Republican favoritism. Previous reports had already revealed portions of the Wikileaks' Twitter chats. They included messages allegedly sent by Assange himself, one saying, "it would be much better for the GOP to win." He later described Hillary Clinton as "a bright, well-connected, sadistic sociopath."

I still stand by it, the guy should be given capital punishment, same with that Manning character.

Why don't you like that Assange and Manning exposed that US killed civilians (among them children and journalists) and then covered it up?

Neocon GOP/Fox News hated the guy then. Now, when Trump "converted" Fox News to doves it's the Democrats who hate the guy.

By the way, it probably makes it more likely that next whistleblower is more "Russia-friendly", because Russia became literally the only sanctuary country for those who expose the bad things US has done/is doing.

UK (or any other country for that matter) is jailing the whistleblowers/their publishers. Russia is giving them a sanctuary.

From what I can tell, Russia is quite happy about what has happened.

She is absolutely terrible and needs to be voted out in 2020.

She's absolutely correct. If you're defending Assange's arrest you're defending the precedent of cracking down on journalists who expose the crimes the powerful commit (and get away with) on a daily basis

If you are a true whistleblower you don't seek asylum in hostile territory like Russia for instance. Many of these "anti-imperialist" blowhards are just apologizing for the states crimes against humanity. Assange blew his trust by following in that tradition.
"True" whistleblower? Crimes against humanity? What are you talking about?

Manning&Assange expose US covering up its crimes against humanity. Like, literally.
Snowden... Jeez..
He's also a rapist, so he would never earn sympathy from me.
It's not a thread about Bill Clinton.

Journalism, the collection, preparation, and distribution of news and related commentary and feature materials through such print and electronic media as newspapers, magazines, books, blogs, webcasts, podcasts, social networking and social media sites, and e-mail as well as through radio, motion pictures, and television.
And exposing the cover-ups of the governments it's like the highest level. But whatever. I rest my case.

Also, stop pretending that it's about hacking. It's extremely likely not. Therefore so much worries by UN and journalist associations.

Also, read the indictment. Conspiring. Agreeing to help to hack the password. Using Jabber and Dropbox. Indicating have been trying to hack, but "no luck so far". Oh, my God, hahahhaa.

There's a possibility that Sweden asks for Assange's extradition and that UK gives them preferential treatment over the US claim. Then Assange could be found not guilty in Sweden, and Sweden could refuse to extradite him to the US. That scenario would mean that Assange wasted seven years of his life for nothing.

That would be both ironic and just.

Ironic, indeed! He wasted his time helping Russians destroying Crooked Hillary and exposing stupid endless wars for "nothing"! Ahaha! So ironic, indeed!

I don't know though if it would be just? Just against Hillary, perhaps?
