I forget who pointed it out, but with the exception of Montgomery and maybe Howard counties, Maryland votes just like a Southern state.

On a related note, I'm not sure exactly what it means, but the lack of correlation in 2012 between the presidential vote and the same-sex marriage referendum is really striking:

For the record the middle class suburban black population (in this case in western Baltimore county) was what I was thinking of with the Atlanta comparison. Atlanta has a lot of northern transplant whites too. Baltimore even has some uber Republican exurbs like Carroll County. Just not as many as Atlanta.

As Lewis has brought up, Prince George's County in particular is obviously more like DeKalb County than anywhere else in America.
