What's the significance of the female/male suicide bomber variations?

Ayers seems to think that Islamist terrorists don't use women, which would mean that the use of women shows nationalist rather than religious motivation. But Al-Qaeda and other Islamic terrorist groups do use women, so I don't think it really means anything.
