[There's] nothing wrong with romanticizing home. I do it too. But one trip to the bowling alley with all the overly-procreating Catholic moms and their six kids reminds me well of the Long Island I hate.
No, it just tells the reader/listener that the guy saying it is an ignorant jackass.  Plus everybody knows "you can never go home again".
