Quote
What are the symptoms of COVID-19 in children?

Many children have few or no symptoms. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, and dry cough, and occasionally, diarrhea. In a few children, this has progressed to shortness of breath. Some of those with progressive symptoms have developed pneumonia. A very small number have required intensive care.

We can't "end" the pandemic, we may reduce it's numbers, but it will resurge in the winter no matter what. We should be fast forwarding to herd immunity.

The video says that if you actually listen to it.

1) who is this guy, even?

2) contact tracing with enforced mandatory self-isolation is not a realistic outcome in the U.S. or any other Western democracy, and the social/political costs of such aren’t worth the risks.

This “plan” deserves to be laughed out of town.
1) He's one of the most neutral and well-respected leftist news and opinion shows on YouTube

2) there are no "risks", what are you talking about?

This "plan" has bi-partisan.support amd is based on scientific and epidemiological recommemdations.

This is really really long, but Sam completely dismantles this libertarian Costco Kevin guy in a debate about whether or not having to wear masks in stores during the pandemic is too authoritarian. I put it on while I did the dishes and listened in the background. Glorious.

I mean, what the actual f**k

"Isolate those at high-risk, let everyone else get on with their lives! End the madness!"

Taking a lot of liberties here, but I immediately see at least a dozen people in that freeze frame who would likely classify as at-high-risk.  And I can't imagine they'll isolate even under orders.
These people see this when they look in the mirror:

A reminder that it didn't need to be this way.

Well of course no country on earth is prepared for a pandemic if you ask government epidemiologists and big pharma lobbyists.  How else would they get their $$$?

This is like when the American Academy of Civil Engineers every year gives the vast majority of states a bad grade on road infrastructure.  Serious risk-seeking and adverse incentives are at play.
Government epidemiologists aren't paid to schill for big pharma.

This guy has read the last 418 pages of this forum topic and summarised it into a clever rap song.

Samson

COVID-19 rap

(Language warning)
Whether or not I agree with the message of the song, that was actually pretty good.

Just from the numbers we have as of now, today is gearing up to be a terrible day in terms of new cases. This probably is due to a combination of increased testing, and a possible mini spike from reopenings. If the second is true, cases will continue to look worse than they were 7 days ago throughout next week.

Just a comment on the second part, definitely not directed at you specifically.  But there seems to be a sense of surprise in some quarters that cases are ticking back up following reopening in some areas.  How could anyone not have expected that to happen?  The level of interpersonal contact is increasing while the population is just as susceptible as ever, except perhaps in a few places like NYC that may have achieved a limited degree of herd immunity.  Did some people expect the virus to give us credit for good behavior the past several weeks and become less infectious?

It's not really a given. It has not happened here in AT after the reopening.
It IS a given if you believe in science, math and epidemiology. Or, to be more specific, it's a given that it is statistically very likely to happen but not guaranteed.

The riots are outdoors, where it’s very difficult for covid to spread. I doubt it will affect much.
What is this I don't even...

...

...dude...

... there are HUNDREDS of people packed shoulder to shoulder and breathing DIRECTLY on to other people's upper bodies and sometimes faces.

I don't want to overruse this, but the situation REALLY calls for it. You posted malarkey, lose a delegate.

In the meantime, mask orders continue to spread, although their speed has declined somewhat in recent weeks. In Colorado, Governor Polis issued an order yesterday allowing businesses to deny service to customers who do not wear masks: https://gazette.com/news/no-mask-no-service-polis-order-gives-business-owners-right-of-refusal/article_9c5bd300-a697-11ea-adf6-53f2e7c59fb5.html. Now, this isn't a full-blown mask mandate, in contrast to what other Governors-primarily in the Northeast and Midwest-have imposed. But it's a step in that direction. How sustainable are these orders going to be when it gets very hot?
The order should require prominent signage so persons can know before they get out of their car that masks are required. It also does not state the means of removal.

"Our Masks are Our Passport to the Colorado We Love"

How about

"Work Will Set You Free"

"Thank You Dear Comrade Polis for a Happy Childhood!"

"Colorado Above All"

You're a blue avatar... why are you supporting the big government authoritarian measure of the government FORCING private businesses or private property to serve potentially pandemic-spreading maskless customers?

Now, the fact that the US is incapable of having a coordinated federal response that brings the virus down back to manageable levels nationwide and is unable to introduce anything mandatory (like mandatory masks or actually forbidding any large gatherings such as rallies or crammed indoor spaces) is a completely different story.

I also generally have a hard time with making things mandatory. Sometimes it's necessary, but usually I expect people to exercise personal responsibility.
Do you have any concept of how narcissistic North American culture is, especially USA? Not only will upwards of 50% (!!!) of people be socially irresponsible, those that ARE responsible will be mocked and harassed for social distancing and wearing a mask. That's just Canada mind you, amd America is worse.

You can't trust North Americans to be socially responsible because, on average, they don't care about anybody but themselves and are below average (or terrible) community members. The fact that you're trusting your fellow Americans to take things seriously and behave appropriately is mind-blowing. They will NOT hesitate to get somebody else killed (and blake it on somebody else) if it means they can avoid any tiny inconvenience whatsoever.

I sometimes post on a hockey forum, and there was a big meme there about how certain NHL teams would be "quietly roaring back" in the standings, which makes no sense, but kind of does if you consider the "quiet" part how aware people are socially and the "roaring" part to be the actual statistics.

COVID-19 is quietly roaring back.

I think we are getting to a point where some states, or at the very least some counties/regions, are going to have to go to total shutdown again.

You can't have a functioning economy with the disease running rampant.
Conservatives are to blame. If the states were properly locked down for 3 months, the economy would've - jn the end - suffered less long-term. Desperate to "save the economy", they opened too early and f___ed the economy (and got people killed). F___ing PATHETIC and disgusting.

there were a dozen profanity-filled things I wanted to say to this aforementioned individual complaining about masks and that he hadn't "had a good burger in months" thanks to the "hysteria".
Maybe that moron should try pick-up or delivery or get a used cheap barbeque off of Kajiji and grill a patty he bought at the grocery store. Just maybe.

They have a chip on their shoulder because they're "a grown-ass man/woman" and "someone is trying to tell me what to do."

"It's a free country!  I have rights!!!"

I've made clear my opposition to mask mandates imposed by government, but have also emphasized my support for mask mandates imposed by businesses. As I've explained before, most of the employees at my job were not wearing masks before they were mandated to do so by the Governor's order back in April. One of my co-workers has constantly complained about it, says that he is "fine", and that he doesn't need to wear a mask. He goes maskless whenever he is not on the clock, and has it down much of the time even when he is on the clock. I saw another employee who had a scarf around his neck, but was maskless and interacting with customers. Many of these people are mental Neanderthals.

The whole macho complex surrounding these people is baffling. Attention seeking at its absolute worst.
I don't see it that way at all. I think it's that these people are literally stupid enough to think that they know better than the government and medical professionals, and they're also too simple-minded to question and challenge their own ideas and consider modifying them.

These states that are shutting down again had better have learned their lesson about "saving the economy" and minimizing the "authoritarianism". The more times they open and shut, the worse off the economy will be. Close early and stay closed until the right time without rushing it.
