Tl;dr - he made up everything in his biography.

He lied, but he's both a Republican and a politician. This won't matter.

Remember, Ruben Kihuen sexually harassed someone and they let him stay the whole term.

You should read the story. He may try to ride it out, but the degree of lying is insane.

Yeah, I agree that the incentives all point to Republicans avoiding a special election. Still, we have two unusual factors - whether the number of lies is going to lead to criminal charges as well as never-ending news coverage, and of course him being gay makes him unsympathetic, even icky to his caucus.

What sort of horrible opposition research did the dems do with this guy?

NY Dems really botched this whole election, not just with this seat

Well the good news is that if he’s a Florida resident as alleged then they will almost certainly have an opportunity to win this seat back in a special election. Everything else reported on thus far is constitutionally ok, but lying about state residency is an enormous no-no.

Cracking down on a state residency requirement violation would open up a can of worms. A huge amount of congressmembers are really residents of DC and not their home states. Santos may live in Florida but if he's registered to vote in NY that's about as much half of congress.

How many states have congressional residency requirements as rigorous as New York’s, though?

Republicans do not want the media or the U.S. Senate investigating Santos’s dodgy-as-hell finances and implicating God knows who. It’s more important now that he disappear than provide an extra vote for McCarthy.

Check this out. Santos’s campaign looks like a money-laundering operation for illegal donations. Perhaps they never expected him to win and get a spotlight on how shady he was.

lol

This dude literally will lie about anything at all. It's not even like he was trying to cover up or protect himself. Dude was just spitballing 24/7.

Are you accusing him of being dishonest in his Twitter conversation with “I cum for Mao” and Bolsonaro’s third son?

I thought Latino included Brazilian, but Hispanic didn’t.

Ok, maybe I was optimistic with the thread title.

Santos-watchers of Atlas, I look forward to reconvening on the Off Topic board once he inevitably get a talk show or appearance on The Traitors/Dancing on Ice/etc, after the prison sentence.

He’ll be resorting to amateur porn before he gets picked for a show like that.

Suozzi is a good fit for the seat, but the GOP has been dominant in Long Island since 2020.

He's a way stronger candidate than Zimmerman but he's probably not any significantly stronger than Schumer, who lost the seat in 2022.

Dems can hope that the partisan dynamic in NY in 2022 was principally about Zeldin vs. Hochul and a special election can revert to past partisan trends (which are still more Republican than they used to be here).
