A lot of observers felt like Democrats were nearly guaranteed to win after the Republicans split and the Democrats nominated a progressive, thereby ensuring that Roosevelt wouldn't win over too many progressive Democrats. On the other hand, Roosevelt and Wilson both campaigned like Roosevelt actually had a chance of winning (no one thought Taft had a real chance). I don't think it's crazy to think that Roosevelt could have won by shoring up support among regular Republicans, winning over more Democrats, or even by winning some Debs voters.
