Say the Campaign Trail Game adds that option, do you think it would be realistically possible for anyone but Wilson to win that election.

The only way is if Taft completely tanks and somehow Teddy gets all the Debs vote, in my opinion.

A lot of observers felt like Democrats were nearly guaranteed to win after the Republicans split and the Democrats nominated a progressive, thereby ensuring that Roosevelt wouldn't win over too many progressive Democrats. On the other hand, Roosevelt and Wilson both campaigned like Roosevelt actually had a chance of winning (no one thought Taft had a real chance). I don't think it's crazy to think that Roosevelt could have won by shoring up support among regular Republicans, winning over more Democrats, or even by winning some Debs voters.

It was certainly possible that another Democrat might have lost, but Wilson was acceptable enough to both conservative & progressive and also to urban & rural wings of the party that he was going to be hard to beat with Republicans divided.

I really doubt it. Anyone who wanted to vote Democrat did and that's all that was really needed. Teddy vs Taft was too great a rift for Wilson to do anything but win in a walkoff.

Any democrat was virtually guaranteed a win the second the split happened

With Wilson himself? Probably not. If Debs wasn't in the mix I could see it happening for Roosevelt but Taft was DOA.

Whether Wilson or TR would have benefited more from Debs not being in the race is an interesting question.
