In 2003, President Bush invaded a country where 10-15% of the global oil supply was being mined. There was a serious war. 5000 of our soldiers, several hundred thousand civilian, and 30000 insurrectionists were killed over a 7 year period. The oil supply chain was disrupted because we invaded a country that defied the international order.
In 2014, a Russian satellite, through a popular rebellion, came into our sphere of influence. The nation that was on the losing side of the change in allegiances occupied the borderlands between themselves and their former satellite. Subsequently, the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin were the deciding votes in 2016 for ascendance of President Trump. Trump wanted to accommodate the aggressive Russian government by trying to make our support of this satellite as tepid as possible. That emboldened Russia and when President Trump lost, you then had an enraged Russia. Russia invaded Ukraine and in order to prevent Russia from invading all the way to Berlin, if not Warsaw, we have to suffer from global supply chains being disconnected because someone fed the bear.
It's obvious what needs to happen with the situation at hand, but we have no idea who will deliver. Biden has been excessively risk averse (though less so than most), but Trump will just let Russia do whatever they want. Appeasement doesn't work.
