Was waiting for someone else to say the obvious, lol. Yeah, the Farm Crisis somehow got worse (maybe Iraq tried invading Saudi Arabia or Iran again and did some bigger version of the Kuwaiti oil fires that wound up causing the climate change and crop failures some were predicting OTL) and a candidate distinctly more progressive and Northern than Clinton got nominated to address it. Maybe Pat Buchanan also successfully primaried Bush to explain the overperformance in the South despite the collapse in the West and Midwest.
