Cool map.

It looks like the Democrats make the plight of the Rust Belt and Farm belt their major economic focus. Maybe a DLC oriented candidate is the nominee in 1988 and loses?

Idk what exactly could lead to that map in 1992. Obviously Bubba isn’t the nominee if AR goes R.

But it’s interesting how, aside from KY/WV, this wasn’t TOO far off from being the actual map in 2008.

The Farm crisis lingers into the 90s and Tom Harkin or Bob Kerrey is the Democratic nominee (or both are on the the same ticket, Clinton/Gore style)

Was waiting for someone else to say the obvious, lol. Yeah, the Farm Crisis somehow got worse (maybe Iraq tried invading Saudi Arabia or Iran again and did some bigger version of the Kuwaiti oil fires that wound up causing the climate change and crop failures some were predicting OTL) and a candidate distinctly more progressive and Northern than Clinton got nominated to address it. Maybe Pat Buchanan also successfully primaried Bush to explain the overperformance in the South despite the collapse in the West and Midwest.
