In all the following elections, all states but one swung to the winner:
(Note: By swing, I mean partisan margin of victory compared to the previous election.)
1968-1972 South Dakota (only state to swing to McGovern) 1976-1980 Vermont (only state to swing to Carter) 1984-1988 Tennessee (only state to swing to Bush I) 1988-1992 Iowa (only state to swing to Bush I) 1996-2000 Maryland (only state to swing to Gore)
Does anybody know why these states swung against the nation? (I know S.D. was McGovern's home state.)
