California Republicans shouldn't even bother

If California Republicans were smart they would throw their support to  a moderate dem although I have no idea who that would be.

But the CA GOP will just run several candidates with no shot of making the top 2

I don't recall any sitting member of Congress calling on him to resign.

These comments by Barabara Lee expressing her dissapointing with the descion are both sour grapes and seem to express a contemptous attitude towards the idea that voters should be able to pick their representives and the concept of senators representing all their counstituents not just the ones they share demographics charectersitcs with.

It's one of the most entitltied things i've seen written by any major us politican.

Yeah, that's a bad statement which makes her sound like a bitter person with an inflated sense of entitlement. It won't make her many new friends.

I agree and it basically ends her candidacy, but she’s also right. So Newsom’s goal the whole time was to nominate a black figurehead to pander while still supporting a white former blue dog behind the scenes? Typical of him.

This is all wonderful news for Senator-elect Katie Porter though anyway. The party is trying to rig it for Schiff, but she has crossover appeal and will win progressives handily.

I think it is less she has crossover appeal and more like Schiff has unique anticross over appeal. He loses every GE matchup because Republicans hate him more in a D v D fight.

I suspect given his lead in the primary he will try to use his massive war chest late in the race to try to get the GOP to unite behibd someone as it looks like a R v. D is his best (only?) chance.

Newsom should appoint Michelle Steel or Young Kim.

Take a reliable vote from McCarthy, force a special election in a flippable district, force the NRSC to compete in California of all places in 2024 (they would be required to, at the very least, split-match eligible expenditures with Steel's/Kim's campaign), gives him bipartisan cred when he runs for President, plus he still gets to say he appointed a woman of color.

Deal, but they get Feinstein's committee assignments.

Replacing the vice-president requires a majority vote in both houses of Congress.

And that is how we ended up with President Manchin

Never thought I'd see an appointed Senator with residency issues. This whole thing was really a mess of Newsome's own making.

I think Garvey getting in helps Schiff. He has been leading the primary but losing the general to Porter.

Garvey has the best chance of uniting the GOP to get to the general. Chance of GOP victory is of course nill.

In theory, this checks out.

In practice,  he right now is just another GOP name next to other GOP names.  The absurdly hypothetical McCarthy run wouldn't have this issue cause people in an electorate of millions already know him. People barely remember Garvey at best. Any Republican needs money or exposure to actually unite the GOP base. The former is probably not going to come in the numbers necessary,  given the present Democratic warchests, ad reservations, and how much campaign time remains. But the later could, especially via FOX, talk radio, and the far-right echo chamber.  That's how Larry Elder kept his lead though he had national backing.

Overall I get your point. But I think you are underestimating some factors.
1. The other GOP figures running are complete no names- none even have a wikipedia page. The most prominent are provably Bradley who got 3.4% statewide in the 2022 senate election and Erick Early who barley advanced to the general in 2020 congressional race against Adam Schiff and then got crushed by 40+ points.

2. If Schiff continues his lead I would expect a return of the 2022 playbook. Some ads saying "Garvey is too conservative for CA etc."

Schiff cynically (and smartly) trying to pick his GE opponent.

2.6 million votes in already. Vote is overwhelmingly 50+ and white

Seems likely to help Garvey and Schiff
