According to Wikipedia, there were just 2 candidates and Bentsen unseated Yarborough (no runoff): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_United_States_Senate_election_in_Texas#Democratic_primary
My bad it was 1972 when the runoff happened and he was 500 votes short. He probably would have still lost in 1972 against a republican incumbent.
