Still 10 points shy of their all time record (Gallup in early 1995)
I’m just astonished at how fast the collapse has happened for the Tories. There’s not even an event like Black Wednesday to pin it on — just Truss’s utter incompetence as PM.

The 45% rate abolition getting defeated would have to be the most ignominious defeat for a new prime minister…ever?

At what point is it reasonable to declare someone the worst PM in modern British history? Asking for a friend.

I just plugged it in to Electoral Calculus - 56% for Labour and 16% for the Tories. It gave the latter *0* seats. And that's without tactical voting enabled.

Obviously no swings are uniform, but it would be an absolute bloodbath. That Starmer meme map posted above would not be far off.

The Prime Minister is not under a desk.

Words just uttered by Penny Mordaunt in the House of Commons.

The Prime Minister is very definitely under a desk.

Ok - there's something weird happening. Truss left Downing Street 30 minutes ago, and it's been confirmed that she's been in the Palace of Westminster, but hasn't been seen since. Mordaunt has suggested that something regrettable has happened, and that she asked to disclose the reason, but was denied.

Mordaunt has also said Truss may not come to the Commons at all today, pitching up tomorrow instead. Several times, Mordaunt has said that she "hopes" Truss will be in the Commons later, but can't guarantee it.

When asked if Truss had gone to the Palace, she deflected, rather than denying it.

Truss has killed a second monarch.

That approval rating is just mind-boggling.

It was always clear that this government was dead on arrival, but I don't know that anyone realized just how dead. Might put some money on the lettuce.

Trying to explain this to a friend who knew about the lettuce but hasn't been keeping up otherwise, and I'm finding it really difficult to convey all aspects of the madness. Just astonishing how the vote was handled - and how bad Truss is at running her own government.

I still can’t get over it. This is textbook “free vote” stuff, right? A motion that ended up with a 100-vote margin, with specific defections already expected for constituency and manifesto-based reasons — why burn so much political capital on THIS, of all things?

It’s a shame that we’re looking at an inevitable polling bounce for the Tories now that they’ve ousted Truss.

Mind you, I said the same thing when they ousted Johnson.

Why has the Tory MP judgment been so abysmally poor at all of this?  Has the party suffered a brain drain ala the Pubs, and what is left is largely a gravitas free zone of pols on the make?

Yes. They've been in power for twelve years and the decision-making of long-term governments in the UK at the equivalent point in their terms has just been getting worse and worse for decades.

It's what happens when a party gets bloated and stagnant. When you don't have to sell yourself to voters, you can get away with a lot.
