Nixon came close to winning NYC too. 48.27% to 51.46%. It was about 70,000 vote difference.

No GOP has come close to that since. Reagan got 38.64% in 1984, which is second highest.

Nixon only got about 42% in NYC in 1972.

Bronx
McGovern   55.2%   243,345
Nixon   44.6%   196,754

Brooklyn
McGovern   50.8%   387,768
Nixon   49.0%   373,903

Staten Island
McGovern   25.6%   29,241
Nixon   74.2%   84,680

Manhattan
McGovern   66.2%   354,326
Nixon   33.4%   178,515

Queens
McGovern   43.4%   328,316
Nixon   56.3%   426,015

OVERALL
McGovern votes = 1,342,996
Nixon Votes = 1,259,867
Total Votes = 2,602,863

1,342,996 / 2,602,863 = 51% [McGovern]
1,259.867 / 2,602,863 = 48% [Nixon]

And there is your math lesson for today.

I guess you are right.  For some reason I thought McGovern got closer to what Mondale got in 1984.
