Business is business and if you advertise yourself as someone's special friend*, you should expect a backlash if that someone has enemies. Just as the people who're staging this boycott should expect their presidential candidate to lose the last Log Cabin Republican votes. And so on at infinitum.
My favourite boycott was Harry Rowohlt's boycott of France during the Mururoa tests. For the duration of the test he smoked his Gauloises
without filters.
*Disclaimer: I haven't seen these Ford commercials. I don't know what I'm talking about.
