Diogenes is overly discredited as a loon. He was smarter than most philosophers of that day and age and had the sense of humor to back it up.

He had a sense of humor, but he was not smarter than his contemporaries. He was just a troll.

i may have taken a few liberties saying that as his intelligence is little hard to determine but he was certainly comparable in that aspect despite his "unorthodox" (for lack of a better term) method of showing it.
