I know this is a meme worthy question but I am legitimately wondering: would Smith's supposed Tulsi-esque DINO status help her get a surprisingly strong showing among #populist rural white voters?

No, those are the trumpiest voters and would be very skeptical of a democrat, much less a black woman. Being a social conservative didn’t help Robert Williams in SC-7

I haven’t heard of McCrory recently, but he’ll be interesting as he’s a pre-trump republican. I wonder how he’ll try and sell himself as a return to the old “bush era republicans” or a dyed in the wool trumpian

If Budd continues a right wing pivot and Beasley stays campaigning hard as she has she might well win this

North Carolina is fairly elastic compared to the rest of the south

Axios partner Engagious/Schlesinger recently gathered 11 swing voters who voted for Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020. Eight of 11 saw a picture of Beasley and said they could name her, while only 4 of 11 said they could name Budd.

I don't live in NC but was Beasley particularly well liked as a State Supreme Justice? Just because they are more likely able to identify her doesn't necessarily mean they like her especially in a case like this.

I thought it was interesting because it means Budd has done a worse job at introducing himself to voters and that's not surprising since Beasley has owned him in the ad wars (aside from outside spending)

This was also interesting: 8 of the 11 said they were very likely to vote in the midterms.
0 said they'd vote for Budd.

Didn't say how many would vote for Beasley.

The panel was also 8 independents, 2 Dems, and 1 Rep. The fact that out of 9 Indies/GOP not even 1 said they'd vote for Budd is kinda stunning.

I really never got the understanding that NC is out of reach past wisconsin this year. NC is a fast growing state built of of tech and education with a large black population, and growing Asian and Hispanic population. In 2020 the state government went 4/6 for republicans.

Democrats can and do win this state in various environments, so why not this year?

Pat McCrory is now a NBC Contributor. Maybe he should become a Democrat. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Go off I guess

If she lost in 2020, and if Republicans have the edge a lot of people think they have in the state this cycle, then why in hell did people think she had a shot in the first place lol.

Different races can make different results. It mostly comes down to Budd being more lackluster then expected

So Beasley ended up only losing by 3.5, slightly outperformed the polls. Considering the national environment and how Dems didn't spend much in this race, it's pretty decent result. I haven't seen much deepdive into this Senate race results..would be interested to see the swings.

As the results were coming in Beasley’s largest overperformance came from around Asheville, not just Asheville but the many blood red counties around it
