The medallion process was fundamentally broken and discriminatory to drivers from and serving in poorer, nonwhite communities. These drivers operating in the black market always existed and most taxi drivers had no problem with them given they mainly operated outside their “turf”. These drivers understood how to navigate their neighborhoods and hide money into any possible nook and cranny so they won’t get f•••ed in a robbery.
It is a clear reality that Uber and Lyft screwed over every single cab driver. Due to legal loopholes and lobbying, they illegally had an unfair advantage over drivers who put endless time and money into their vehicles, for worse service given millennials don’t know how to drive without a GPS. And yet, expectedly, their services got worse by getting more expensive and still not serving low-income nonwhite areas.
These ridesharing apps need to be nationalized and the government needs to help consolidate cab drivers into an orderly syndicate that serves all areas with ample insurance in case of theft or bodily injury.
