Kerry won Alameda county CA, which is where I voted in November 2004.  Bush won Lowndes county MS, which is where I'd vote today.  Interestingly, Alameda was a GOP stronghold for years.  It's hard to remember now but even Berkeley went for Dewey in 1948.  And so did the rest of the county.  WWII brought thousands of blue-collar workers to Oakland, and it was only a matter of time really.  Vietnam, which coincided with the 18-year-old vote and the enfranchisement of many students, ended Republican rule in Alameda.  And they've been Democrats ever since.  Similarly, Lowndes was a Democrat stronghold for many years.  From prehistoric times, pretty much, till the early 70s Lowndes was carried by Democrats.  Since then the county has been shifting toward the GOP.  Even when Carter handily carried the state in '76, Ford carried Lowndes handily.  Reagan also won here in '80, and they've been Republicans ever since.
