I had to come out to my mom about it a few days ago. She's... intrigued. And she's been sending links to anything fox-related she finds on Etsy or related sites to me.

I have no remaining living grandparents. My grandmother on my dad's side passed quietly and peacefully this morning. Her mental state had been deteriorating for a while, we're pretty sure she had a stroke a few weeks/months ago and she'd been having memory issues. I last saw her a couple years ago and my last memory with her was in her apartment having some great local pizza, laughs all around.

I'll miss her, even if I didn't see her much. She passed the most peacefully of all my grandparents. All others died of cancer or complications from it in the case of my grandfather on my mom's side (quite a resilient guy, he was, considering they gave him months to live in the 80s and he made it to 2020)

Death anxiety hitting hard again.

Been back in SC a few days now, and things have changed a little bit. My hometown is slowly being consumed by suburban sprawl, which I hate to see.

I also realized why I lost so much weight when I went to college... there's nothing to do here in walking distance that isn't eating. Even driving around there's not much to do but eat...

Muaddib and I are now engaged as of a couple days ago. He proposed while we were vacationing in Sedona.

Interesting weekend ahead. Thanks to a combination of COVID and other stuff, my mom's burial was delayed for three years until this upcoming Saturday. So for the first time in nine years, I'll be back in Connecticut. Plans are to deliver the eulogy, as I did for my dad, and visit my hometown again, which will include paying my respects at the Sandy Hook Memorial. I'll return to Virginia on Sunday.

The fact that I'll be seeing my extended family for the first time since that period, and getting to check out my hometown/street to see how much has changed over the decade, actually has me looking forward, even though it will mostly be a weekend of boring Amtrak trips.

finally tried alcohol today. Got a screwdriver while at the sports bar with a friend and also tried a sip of his Yuengling. Screwdriver was ok. Basically just tasted like orange juice but with a slight offtaste. Honestly just felt slightly worse than regular OJ. Yuengling was so bitter my face scrunched up to a huge degree.

Drank like 2/3 of the screwdriver that was about it though. Feel a little weird but not really bad or anything.

Honestly i'm just sticking with soda except maybe for special occasions lol. Probably for the best anyway considering my dad got his neuropathy in part from his alcoholism, so not going down that road's probably for the best.

just dropped a college class for the first time. Prof apparently doesn't care if I'm representing the university at a week-long conference states away and instead says I need "better time management".

Dude was an a-hole last semester too, and I don't think he even wants to teach this class from the way he's been doing it.

Years ago I used to regularly watch Al Jazeera because the breadth of their news coverage is simply unparalleled by any other agency. AJ was literally the only network that covered things like the conflict in the Central African Republic in any depth (aside from some token reporting on the BBC). I always knew it was Qatari state media, but embarrassingly never twigged on until recently that it really is just blatant Islamist propaganda. I refuse to watch it any longer, but unfortunately I can't find any other news service that matches AJ in the scope of their reporting. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I mean, you can still listen to them, just keep that in mind and don’t believe *everything* they say. Listen to a variety of sources and keep biases in mind.
