A few weeks ago we had a huge snow dump of 1-2 feet here, but this has melted away again due to warm winds.

Now it's just damn cold outside with sub-zero temps each day and snow only above 1600 meters ...

And the whole next week will be clear too without any snow.

But the ski areas are all up and running already because of plenty snow cannons who produce a lot of snow in these sub-zero temps.

This is going to be big, according to the forecast.

2-4 feet of fresh snow up on the mountains.

Yeah, it dumped around 1 foot down here in the valley overnight and about a meter (3 feet up on the mountain).

Still snowing heavily and much more snow expected over the next few days ...

We'll get a Siberian cold tomorrow, with temps around -25°C and around 100 mph winds ...

And after it had 1-3 feet of snow today.

And more snow on Saturday and Sunday.

Winter is definitely here ...

In the area i live, Porto Metropolitan Area, it rarely snows but December was very dry and there is few snow in the mountains, particularly in Serra da Estrela. In my area it only rained like 4 or 5 days and temperatures were quite pleasant at around 16ºC (61ºF).

Somehow I'd love to be in Portugal right now.

But I also like the winter, so no problem really.

January has been the 2nd coldest January since 1980 around here (3°C colder than normal).

But February is already back to 3°C warmer than average ...

The winter so far has been ca. 1°C warmer than the average winter since 1960.

We got a big dump of snow in early January, but nothing since then ... and in general, precipitation levels are only 60% of normal winters since 1960.

In the past few days, we had some days in Salzburg with 22°C (72°F), which is unusual for this time.

It snowed 6-7 inches overnight.

This was only the 2nd "major" snowfall so far this year after early-January, which dumped some 2 feet - but which has already melted away almost completely until yesterday.

Extremely weird weather these days:

A couple days ago it snowed 6-7 inches. This has melted away again.

Tomorrow and Sunday, there will be extreme Föhn-winds with up to 100 mph - which is pushing up temps to around 20-26°C (75°F), with Sahara desert dust coming - colouring the snow red !

Then on Monday, the temps are collapsing to zero degrees again with new snowfall ...

Extreme danger for the next 2 days (I'm in the 2nd red district in the east):

They are also projecting 2 feet of new snow for Monday and Tuesday ... Tongue
