Obviously Chirac is a conservative.  Americans just get confused because we only have the two right-wing parties here.

Sorry about the anti-French behaviour here, Julien and Math.  Rest assured it isn't how all Americans feel.

Chirac is in fact a conservative, but he also abides by the traditional French foreign policy of blaming French national failure on America and their McDonalds, which doesn't even use fresh cheese (or as they say in France, "Fresh fromage")!  He is the failed leader of a failed nation, he can have is double digit unemployment, collapsing pension system, and "granduer", I'm perfectly happy with my growing GDP and a version of football that barely involves my feet.  Sixty years ago, we saved the world while the French practiced speaking German, today we save it while they practice speaking Arabic.

It is all a matter of perspective John Ford.  From the perspective of the lower 90% of the population, France is a far more successful nation than the US.  Quality of life is far better there for all but the very rich.  Why do you think that the working poor of America, permanently trapped in $7 an hour jobs with no social safety net to fall back on would care about whether GDP grew by 2% or 4% in a given year?  They see almost none of that $.
