Happiest: Evers, and the margin by which Whitmer won (I mean, come on, a D+11 result in one of the top swing states in a night expected to be a red wave is far more impressive than Desantis running up the margins in his barely-competitive state). It was a glorious night for Democratic Gubernatorial candidates in the competitive midwest. Voters still know that Democratic governors are advocates for workers, and Republican governors are self-interested.
Saddest: Barnes, knowing that he was much closer to winning than I'd thought. I think it's a remarkable sign for Democrats, though, that Johnson's seat was more competitive this year than any cycle since 2004. It was embarrassing for Johnson to barely cling onto this seat in a year where all the fundamentals favored him. The result shows that Democrats will continue to be strongly competitive in the rust belt. The regions where Democrats are amassing votes have changed, but the urban and suburban trends towards Democrats that we've seen in WI, MN, MI, and PA will keep all of these states within reach of Democrats on the local and national level. This election result proved that the Democratic coalition is stronger than the Republican coalition, even with an unpopular president and unfavorable economic sentiment.
