Can Justin Fairfax run for reelection if he becomes governor? There is a one term limit in Virginia, but he hasn't be elected governor in the first place.

Yes. Article V, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution only stipulates that "He shall be ineligible to the same office for the term next succeeding that for which he was elected, and to any other office during his term of service," so he'll be able to run for a full first term since he wouldn't have been elected to this term, though it's an unusual circumstance (to say the least) considering Northam is the first Gov. of VA since the Civil War not to complete his term, w/ VA being the only state never to have had a succession in all those years.

Additionally Fairfax gets to appoint his LG. This doesn't sound all that important, but then one realizes that the LG is an elected office just like the Gov in VA, and the person who gets that office would have the same incumbency advantage that Fairfax will have.

Don't be surprised if the Obamas follow:

Gotta hide your shameful exit or disdainful intra-party machinations behind the superbowl.

Though considering how many twists have already happened throughout this saga, I wouldn't be surprised if Northam survives a bit longer.

I understand his motivation, but how does he achieve such a goal? Especially in his current predicament?

I mean he lost 40 pts with Dems virtually overnight, there really is no recovering from that.

Good job by Fairfax with his latest statement. They need to start using the term coup d’état because that’s what this really is. We must hang onto power at all costs. We cannot let Republicans have the trifecta because of a couple bad pictures and two women being paid to say that Fairfax raped them.

I don't know how you get to Pub gov. If there are resignations then it all won;t be at once, it will be timed out and planned so that the line of succession never gets to speaker of the house. In fact, right now the likely path is: Fairfax resign -> Northam appoints someone who can help amend for his racisms -> Northam resigns a while later or tries and stays on.

So yeah, Fairfax definitely needs to go.

I can’t believe they’re actually going for impeachment. At this point the VA Democratic Party is just using Fairfax as a convenient punching bag to throw under the bus. Why can’t we just circle the wagons and unify around the message that the allegations are false and move on? That is the only logical thing to do that allows us to guarantee we won’t lose any of the statewide offices.

The GCB in VA is D+8, right now in the middle of scandal. Do you really think that if Fairfax is ousted, a female and/or POC gets appointed, she would lose in Blue VA? With that GCB? With who the VAGOP has to offer?

It's sad that the the only people the state GOP have who have a profile large enough to potentially win are 'Gimmi millions and I'll lose by 13' Comstock, 'found a way to lose to Stewart despite teacking right' Freitas, and 'won my seat in a coin toss but I'm still moderate' Yancey. And they all still could lose, since we now know that the Stewart, Vogel, and other 'Southern' oriented types have full control of the state GOP primary.

It even gets better if Northam has to go in the future, with his taint gone said person ascends and then a second appointment is made, and that one is confirmed by special. The only way someone ascends and reps have a 100% chance of a pickup is if that person is Herring, and right now he doesn't look to be going anywhere.

Also you are this close to going on my ignore list...
