There’s a good chance McCain himself wouldn’t have ran again in 2012. He’d be 76 by then and the 2009-13 presidential term was far from easy. My guess is Palin would be nominated as a sacrificial lamb or someone like Romney, Pawlenty, or Huntsman would be nominated.
