I actually think this thread is interesting. Plenty of people with authoritarian views have considered themselves "libertarian" throughout history. For example, many slaveowners considered themselves "libertarian", claiming that abolishionism was a statist confiscation of private property.
Source? I wasn't aware that word was in common use in the early 19th century.
They didn't use the word "libertarian", but the the pre-1896 Democratic Party used rhetoric and had beliefs that would today be considered libertarian. Andrew Jackson's beliefs about the National Bank were similar to Ron Paul's beliefs about the Federal Reserve. Slaveowners argued that the Constitution protects the
right to private property and that slaves are property, claiming abolishionism was therefore an unconstitutional confiscation of private property.
