I think I can say with a great degree of confidence that he no longer has a "commanding" lead over the others. This is mostly because (1) his post-announcement bounce has faded, and (2) when he says things in public they frequently turn people off, especially base voters.

That said, however, I think he is still ahead, albeit by a less-than-insurmountable margin. In fact, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if his campaign somehow ends up not surviving until Iowa.

He needs to give progressives hope that their preferred policy proposals have a chance to be passed, even if he doesn't personally agree with them. Remember when Hillary said during the 2016 campaign that single-payer health care could never happen? That was one of the things which contributed to depressed Democratic turnout. If Biden does something along those lines, he could very well end up just like Hillary.

At this point, I’m not counting him out, but I think he is currently on a trajectory similar to that of Ed Muskie in 1972.
