How about an unscripted Q&A press conference with the national media instead?

nah, the elitist media would be mean to Saint Sarah. They might even use non-deferential tones with her!

Did his boss deserve to be fired as well?

10 Republicans and 4 Democrats ran this investigation. Palin abused her powers for personal gain, plain and simple.

Yes, because his boss refused to fire him.

based on my limited knowledge of the case, the trooper in question does sound like a nasty piece of work who probably deserved to be fired. However, it does strike me as odd that his boss would go to the wall for him.
