So the weather has been cold for me in Dallas, and with that comes warmer clothing. Some days, today being one of them, I will wear a hat. I never really cared much for beanies and baseball caps and cowboy hats are not warm enough, and any tweed hat or fedora is just yikes (especially a fedora). So when my dad was in Pakistan a few winters back and was about to come home and asked if I wanted anything, I said yeah get me one of those pakols, if anything it would be a fun gift. My dad and uncle (well my dad’s first cousin but he’s basically an uncle) thought it was a great idea and just picked one up at a stall in Lahore on the way to the airport. I did not wear it often much as I hardly was outside for a couple years, and even considered giving it away but kept it around in some storage drawer because I thought it was cool. Well, I get into college, and there is a lot more walking and being outside in the cold, so I wear some hats but I did not really like any of them too much for various reasons, so I just put on the pakol one day (a few weeks ago around mid october). Well, I ended up liking it and thought it was the best and most practical hat I’ve worn after a few days and it made my dad and uncle happy, so I just wear it a lot when it’s going to be cold outside and I will be out that day. 99%+ of people leave me be as I just mind my own business, with maybe 2-3 people a week just saying cool hate or whatever, and around one person every couple of weeks that says like that’s the most retarded thing I’ve ever seen get out of America, or today someone is like staring at me for 10 seconds and then is like where are you from, and I was like Dallas, and he’s like no where are you really from and points to the hat (at which point I just take it off) , and I was like fine, my dad is from Pakistan, but I just like wear this hat I’m not a pashtu *cuts me off before I can finish* says something like, yeah figures, all them people from Afghanistan and Pakistan wear those, bye. Well, I have the good fortune of being white here so I’m not painting myself as some victim because I am not, as I can just take it off and blend in and forget about it. But what about people who are not fortunate like me? What about my friends who I watched get yelled at, pack ur bags and go back to Pakistan (ok that’s clever and sorta funny I’ll give him that), or my dad who was denied service at restaurants in Eastern TN, and had stuff like “go home sand(n word) beggars” carved into his door, or another first cousin once removed was just eating at a restaurant in Wyoming and was just stood over by some dude breathing over him until he left, along with all of those people plus many more who get asked where are you *really* from every few weeks at an absolute minimum,  etc etc. I’ll be blunt, this does not happened often, and the people who do things like that are a very small percentage of the population, but I draw three things. One, I am d@mned lucky to be white and have a choice to blend in, since even an incident or two can suck pretty bad, two I really feel bad for people who cannot do that, three despite whatever small quantity of nastiness may still exist, it does exist, and things are not really 100% equal and perfect, being white here is still a benefit for now. Idk.

Now that I'm done growing height wise, my dad pokes fun at me every week or two saying if you ate more vegetables and took your vitamins you would be an inch to two taller. It is true that I would hardly ever touch any vegetables after like 2 years of ages until I was like 15ish, and I was really bad at taking vitamins, like maybe one to two times a week on average, could that actually have cost me an inch or two? I'm not like upset or super unconfident or anything, like I round down my height instead of rounding it up or not rounding at all, but like I am curious.

One Trumpy Boomer said im quote on quote one of the good ones, and would make a good cop (I think he was just put at ease by my whiteness lol), I am always honored when someone says something like that even if I don't view it as fully true.

Every once in a while I look around at all the people banned from Atlas, quite a few have been banned since I started posting here, and I'm amazed that I'm still around after everything. I may not be an institution, but I'm kinda like a Creed Bratton in that sense.

I almost inadvertently killed myself 20 minutes ago

It was rainy and cold outside, I was driving home and my windows were all fogged up because inside my car was warmer and the temperature difference fogs up the windows and my stupid @$$ young immature self did not turn on the anti-fog heating because I was too cheap because it would cost me a little extra gas to run it so I thought I could make it home with the windows all fogged up and I was making a left turn and it was very hard because everything was fogged up and so hard to see, and sure enough when I made the left turn I cut too early and I drove over a traffic island, going 50 miles an hour, and I nearly hit a massive light pole and I swerved back onto the street at the last minute and almost got hit by the car in the lane that I was merging into from the rear, so that scared the sh!t out of me, accidently almost died, :/, kinda shaken up rn

Well, glad to hear you're alright Bagel, but my god, stop counting pennies (in the form of gas) when you're driving. It's not just you on the road. You could have just as easily plowed right into one or more pedestrians, or caused serious injuries to someone else by hitting their car.

If you can't see, either stop your car or turn on the right AC settings to clear it up. You can't compromise on that.

Yeah you are right, I am incredibly cheap and it almost got me and possibly even others killed. I won’t do it again. It was bad to do in those nasty night conditions with additional 83% humidity outside that would refog after 5 minutes of cleaning the windows, and not even rolling down the windows too much either because I didnt want to also take up a bit more gas that way. I’m kinda just tryna talk to friends about it rn and joke about it to relieve myself, but ik it was wrong and I wont do it again either.

The car I was driving is also a fairly large SUV with good bottom clearance so it took it like a champ and came out fairly unscathed from what I can tell so far.

So we could not come up with a name for it until today when my dad called it the black mamba in honor of Kobe. I really like that, so now it finally has a name.

>most dads: goodnight son I love you

>my dad: you are more conservative than your 65 year old dad, shame on you *walks away*

Have you changed your dad's political beliefs on any issues or visa versa

For me I have convinced him to support more neoliberal policies on economic issues while was able to convince me to change my opinion big time on trade with China(on other trade issues I have made him more supportive on trade). On the other hand we disagree massively on foriegn policy with him being way less supportive of interventionism than I am .

On cultural issues it depends on the issue , on some issues I have convinced him to be more liberal and some vica versa

Not really, I have stayed the same and he has gone further left. Like he used to be anti lgbt for his whole life, but changed around 2015, he used to be pro-life, but he's been pro choice since 2018, and he has not really convinced me of much. I am one of the most conservative people in my family in both politics and religion, and as you know, I am not particularly conservative in either of those regards myself. I have hardly changed on any issues my whole life, but he flip flops and waffles too much for my taste. Like he must have changed his presidential primary opinion almost ten times since the start of 2019, meanwhile I was always for Delaney on the contingent that Biden jumps in, and now I am for Biden. It's funny though because there is a massive disconnect between political ideology moderation and partisanship that not enough people get. I am very bipartisan once people get into office on ideology and bills, and I am not a far left wing firebrand, but I am fiercely partisan in voting. I will hardly ever vote for a Republican, meanwhile Warrenites and others like them will vote Baker and stuff, and my dad will occasionally fawn for people like McCain or say they won't vote for Warren as the nominee.

We also clash quite a bit over subcontinent issues. Despite being comparatively objective given his upbringing, he's still way too pro Pakistan for my taste, and I'm not afraid to push back and question that kind of stuff. ie. I love India like it is my ancestral motherland (because it is), completely supporting India in the 1971 war, and acknowledging the Bengali genocide, calling out radical Islamic terrorism by its name, I don't really like Jinnah, just because they elected a woman to PM does not make them woke lmao, the frontier corps are essentially barbarians, a wall must be built with Afghanistan to keep those radical mooching Pashtun stone age cave dwellers out, and deport many of the Pashtun refugees, etc.
