The LDS Church wants to distance themselves as far away as they can from polygamist groups. If there's even a suspicion that a member might be practicing polygamy in secret then it will result in a church investigation, and if you're found to be engaging in the practice then you're excommunicated immediately, no ifs, ands, or buts.
