The Secretary of State has issued a directive on new procedures.

In addition to all of the other problems caused by waiting until the day before the election, the Secretary of State has unilaterally imposed an unconstitutional three-and-a-half month voter registration deadline on the rescheduled election by directing boards of elections not to reopen registration. The Ohio Constitution says that "Every citizen...[who] has been registered to vote for thirty days...is entitled to vote at all elections."

I don't like how this happened, it should have been announced days ago, but I do wonder what exactly was happening behind the scenes. Last night was when workers would have reported to set up the polling places, so maybe the counties were finding out that they were going to be totally unable to staff most of their precincts, in which case late was better than never.

The new Ohio law flagrantly violates the plain text of the state constitution and federal law (which both forbid registration deadlines longer than 30 days), so who knows what's actually going to happen.
