In 2018, CA Supreme Court Justice Carol Corrigan (R) is up for retention. A Republican on the court faces a retention election under a Democratic governor. Does Corrigan win, or does a new Democratic justice get appointed?

It's a nonpartisan election, but it's known Corrigan was appointed by a GOP governor.
