It could be even worse, or somewhat better.  There's a wide confidence interval (95% CI 3.8–8.9) in their calculations.

I dont think Australia, Germany, USA and South Korea got the lesser version compared to Italy, France, UK and Spain.

Clearly testing rates in the latter countries are much lower as Dr Birx hinted yesterday.

Italy has been testing since February, so they'll have tested the most just by virtue of doing it longer than anyone else has.  Reporting tests/million doesn't capture changes in testing capacity, which have a deterministic effect on the "new case" curve.

Edit: The link is a rather brief summary of the results. No information about the subpopulations, no information about confidence intervals. I am going to assume the researchers know what they are doing, but some things to keep in mind.

- The sample size is 1000, but in 400 households. Clearly all participants are not independent, so confidence intervals would be (much) higher than 1000 person study with truly independent participants.
- There is some talk that Germans criteria for a Covid death are much stricter than most other countries. Nothing unreasonable, but something people need to be aware off.

No, you have missed what I was trying to say. The testing needs to be measured relative to the cases in that country.

Saying that Australia and Italy have the same testing rate per million is not relevant as you can see above.

My point is that we need to look at countries where we have testing in the broader population (without symptoms) if we are going to see effective analysis overall. This is especially true for something like antibody results for example.

So you tell if we look countries with low positive % on the tests, we can assume there is few underestimation of positive and the fatality rate is more on target, ever if there are no problem in the count of the deaths

Italy *still* has a positive test rate of around 25%. That means that there are a ton of positive cases not being tested in Italy. Italy's actual total infections are at least as high as the reported cases in the U.S.,* i.e., approaching 600,000, but possibly as high as 1 million+.

Noticed something interesting about Italy's numbers.

New cases per day in Italy is going downward, but it's doing so in an interesting pattern. It's going downward like a staircase, not like a slope. I'm unsure if this pattern is due to reporting flaws as it goes downward, or if the cases are actually fluctuating while overall decreasing. Take a look for yourself:
